Thrice
is an anomaly; a sublime conglomeration of kick-ass, blood-pumping
music, combined with the lyrical phrasing of a literary wordsmith.
Their powerful, driving beats and buzz-saw riffs will literally leave
you covered with goose bumps, and their melodic hooks and pensive
lyrics will dare you to look inward.
In their sophomore full-length album all the hybrid-genre taglines
go out the window. Melodic-hardcore, metal-core, power-pop, screamo,
-- leave those titles to the bands that fit them. With "The
Illusion of Safety," Thrice has created a genre of their
own. There are no clever labels to encapsulate it. All the earth-shaking
beats, flaming guitar leads, driving bass lines and soaring vocals
have been turned up several notches higher, but the main thing that
sets this album apart is the soul. This is not a "1-2 F--- you"
hardcore record, a cookie-cutter pop punk album, or an emotional sob
story. This is an album diverse in its sonic and emotive qualities.
