On the tour, the Black Angels will open for Erickson and then return later each evening as his rhythm section. And that's not the only special part of Erickson's sets, since they will include songs from the 13th Floor Elevators catalog that haven't been performed live in years.
“The Black Angels bring the aura of mid-1966 – the drilling guitars of early Velvet Underground shows, the raga inflections of the late-show Fillmore jams, the acid-prayer-stomp of Austin Avatars, the 13 th Floor Elevators, everywhere they go”
– David Fricke, Rolling Stone
"Erikson created a body of work that's as inscrutable as it is brilliant”
– Rolling Stone
1966, Roky Erickson and The Thirteenth Floor Elevators release The Psychedelic Sounds of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, planting the seeds of the burgeoning Austin, Texas psychedelic counter-culture.
2006, Austin-based rockers The Black Angels release their debut, Passover , a droning, drum-heavy modern psych-classic that drew heavily on the trademark sounds The Thirteenth Floor Elevators championed some forty years prior.
Now, Roky Erickson and The Black Angels, for the first time ever, will tour together for a handful of West Coast dates including an unbelievable Halloween night performance in Los Angeles. Backed by the Black Angels, Roky's set will include performances of 13 th Floor Elevators songs that haven't been performed live for over 40 years. For each of these unique musical experiences, The Black Angels will open the evening with a solo-set of their ominous, brooding wall of sound repertoire; then, following a short break, the Angels will return to the stage, this time as the rhythm section for he who influenced their musical style so dramatically - Roky Erickson.
The new and the old, the student and the teacher, together at last, a collaboration joining the distinctive sounds of nearly a half-decade of psych-rock.
This is truly a can't-miss live performance. The Black Angels have recently been touring in support of their highly acclaimed follow-up to Passover - Directions To See A Ghost – and will be heading back to traverse Europe this winter. Roky Erickson continues to create and change the very foundations of modern music and was recently featured in the documentary, You're Gonna Miss Me. |
