"The heavy weight brass band of the world, The Rebirth
Brass Band"
The Rebirth Brass Band's signature brand of super heavy funk has placed
them among New Orleans' top brass bands and are the unequivocal, hands
down favorite of the younger generation. Formed in 1983 at the now
legendary musician incubator of Joseph S. Clarke high school in New
Orleans' 6th ward, the Rebirth has brought to jazz their own modernist
vocabulary, adding licks and rhythms absorbed from rap, reggae, avant
garde jazz numbers to youthful P-Funk grooves -with the precision
of James Brown back beat. Rebirth has used their rolling syncopation
tuba / saxophone / trombone/ trumpet approach on everything from Charlie
Parker bebop to Herbie Hancock
jazz rock; War, Michael Jackson, Prince,
Rick James, even TLC tunes
have found their way into an amazingly diverse repertoire of original
standard tunes.
Rebirth's funky brass has also captured the attention of musical innovators
throughout the glove. They have opened for the Ohio
Players, Maceo Parker, George Clinton & The P-Funk All-Stars,
The Grateful Dead, Dr. John, and the
Meters. Additionally, journalists, filmmakers, and photographers
from around the world in search of a definitive image of the city
of New Orleans look to the Rebirth to provide one. In the process
they discover articulate spokesmen who well represent the musical
mecca that nurtured them.
This unique and invigorating music that sounds so spontaneous is the
combination of natural born talent, dedication, spirit, and complete
immersion in the New Orleans street tradition. Their sound and vibe
is youthful and fun loving, but musically they are mature and sophisticated
- and totally unmatched by anyone, anywhere. The Rebirth Brass Band
possess an impressive work ethic, an understanding of themselves,
their heritage, and the rare ability to communicate life, love, and
peace in a language that is truly universal.
