Fridge
are a trio of English musicians at the forefront of this whole "post-rock"
thing. Their new record, the unusually titled "Happiness,"
is their first to be released domestically in the US and continues a string
of high-quality releases from the group. It also finds Fridge in a reflective
mode quite different from the electro-futurisms of their last full-length,
"Eph." It's rare that an electronic
group achieves this kind of feeling without sounding like Boards
of Canada, but Fridge's double life as electronic musicians (Fridge
member Kieran Hebden also goes the pretty-electro
route as Fourtet) and rock band gives
them an edge on both camps. As guitars ripple above drum machines, the tension
between these vastly different worlds swells up and adds a satisfying depth. |
