“ Santa Cruz trio the Devil Makes Three displayed a youthful vigor while drawing on hot jazz, gypsy swing and various other string-band music.”
- NO DEPRESSION MAGAZINE on the Devil Makes Three’s 2006 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival appearance
Bay Area favorite the Devil Makes Three is a three-piece acoustic act with a rock ‘n’ roll heart--the band can whip any crowd into a dancing frenzy, keeping one foot at the barn dance and one foot planted firmly on the gallows floor. Following two self-released studio albums that have sold over 10,000 copies, the band released a live CD in November ‘06, A Little Bit Faster and A Little Bit Worse. The release shows the band in top form, recharging fan favorites such as “Beneath the Piano” with a live spark honed from years of touring, all while they turn folk classics such as “My Gal” into high-energy, demolition jug-band blues. The subtle twang of “Shades” (off their self-titled debut album) is transformed into a bad-times ragtime stomper, while a double-time rendition of the traditional classic “St. James Infirmary” hits with the impact of a freightliner.
