To dismiss Chicago's
Alkaline Trio as pop-punk is to cheat
them and yourself out of something that's much more than a handful of chords
and a little attitude. Set aside the fact that you've heard a million albums
made up of guitar-bass-drums-vocals, and take a second to remember that
all your favorite records are made up of guitar-bass-drums-vocals. What
sets Alkaline Trio apart is their innate ability to write perfect little
pop songs and then make them better by messing 'em all up. There's some
kind of metaphor for life in there, but we have no time for that today.
The band's blazing third album, and first for Vagrant,
is "From Here To Infirmary,"
and everything you've come to expect you'll find: Matt
Skiba sings the raucous heartbreakers and Danny sings the weepy heartbreakers;
either way, your heart is rocked. Whether with their alcohol-fueled love
songs or their love-fueled alcohol songs, Alkaline Trio will move you with
something you've seen a million times before, by showing it to you in a
way you've never seen.
